My name is Andrew and I love a good challenge, and I’m back again for another year, as if I didn’t get enough of those currents last year!
Those who know me know that I love endurance sports, the ones that make people ask “why would someone want to do that to themselves.” I have ran half marathons, completed numerous triathlons, and I love swimming long distances. In July 2023 I successfully swam from New Brunswick to PEI, following the Confederation Bridge. The route was supposed to be 14km long, but the currents were much stronger than anticipated and after a 6 3/4 hour swim and 18.5km I reached the warm sands of PEI to the welcoming embrace of my family. This grand challenge is a charity swim organized by Givetolive, with all proceeds going to Brigadoon Village, which is a year-round camp program dedicated to children, youth, and families living with health conditions or other life challenges in Atlantic Canada.
This charity is close to my heart, as my cousin-in-law, Thomas Nickerson, attended Brigadoon Village regularly. Thomas tragically passed away in the summer of 2022, with his mother and 18-month-old sister. Thomas was an extraordinary person; he was kind-hearted, and passionate. He enjoyed playing video games and aspired to be a chef upon completing high school. I will be completing this swim in memory of Thomas.
Brigadoon village is a “pay what you can” camp so that children of all income levels can receive lifechanging memories, supports and friendships. The cost to providing an experience to a child is $1,700, however the average family can typically only pay around $300. The camp primarily depends on donations to keep running, and as a fundraising group in 2023 we reached a whopping $150,000 raised! Help me and the group blow past that number in 2024!
