SPONSOR JEN'S SWIM TO PEI TO SEND KIDS TO CAMP
Weather permitting, July 28th, I will be swimming from New Brunswick to PEI, alongside (and partly under!) the Confederation Bridge. Organized by Give to Live, “The BIG SWIM” event is a fundraiser for Brigadoon Village—an incredible year-round camp facility for children and youth living with health conditions or other life challenges including celiac disease, visual impairment, cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, intestinal insufficiency/short gut, heart conditions, bereavement, and others.
This year marked 35 years of living with Type 1 diabetes. Knowing the important and lasting impact that diabetes camp had for me as a kid and teen, attempting this swim feels like the perfect personal physical and mental challenge to acknowledge this milestone in my life while allowing me to raise money to help send other kids to camp, including many of my patients--to give them the experience of camp, and for the first time for many of them, the feeling that they "belong"
I have been fortunate to have been involved with Brigadoon since the very first camp 13 years ago--as a volunteer, as a dietitian, as a camper (adult Type 1 diabetes camp), and as a founder of one of the camps. I have both experienced and witnessed the transformative effect that this special place has on the lives of my patients and so many other children.
So, I ask for your support. Please sponsor my swim to help send kids to camp if you can, or come cheer me on in PEI July 28th when I will swim for myself, for other people struggling or thriving with Type 1 diabetes, for my patients that inspire me every day, and for all the extraordinary kids who just want to go to camp and feel ordinary.
Huge thanks and shout-out to Erin Carmody, my colleague and friend who will be kayaking beside me to help monitor my blood sugars, throw food at me, and shoo the sharks away!
